Mailing Preference Service (MPS) | ||||||||||||||||||
The
Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a free service set up 20 years
ago and funded by the direct mail industry to enable consumers to have
their names and home addresses in the UK removed from or added to lists
used by the industry.
The MPS Consumer File is a list of names and addresses of consumers who wish to limit the amount of direct mail they receive. The use of the Consumer File by list-owners and users is a requirement of the British Code of Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing administered by the Advertising Standards Authority. The MPS can remove a name from up to 95% of Direct Mail lists. It will not stop mail that has been sent from overseas, un-addressed material or mail addressed to The Occupier. Consumers can expect to continue to receive mailings from companies with whom they have done business in the past. They may also receive mailings from small, local companies. It takes up to 4 months for the Service to have full effect. For more information about the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) click here or use the contact details at the bottom of this page. |

When Purchasing or Renting Mailing Lists, Remember... Many of the people who register their preferences with MPS have suffered a bereavement, and they simply want to stop future commercial mailings from being sent to the deceased. Unwanted, unread Direct Mail has no place in anyone's home. If consumers are not interested in receiving it, MPS will update their records for Direct Mail companies to see and adjust their lists as requested. It is recommended that any mailing lists that you purchase/rent are cleaned via the MPS file. Failure to do so could result in a fine and/or adverse publicity. As responsible professionals, Direct Mail companies don't want to upset potential customers/clients or waste time and money by sending unwanted marketing. |
